Law & Order — and treachery

As has become an alarming habit, I got roped into an episode of Law & Order earlier this evening. Then another. Then another. Then another. Finally, after four episodes, TNT had the dignity to give me a break and go with some other programming for a little while.

I just recently got in on the Law & Order craze. On the one hand, I did stave off the addiction for a decade of episodes. The downside to that, of course, is that every single rerun they air on TNT is new to me. On Memorial Day, when they do nothing but show Law & Order all day, I find myself watching for about… all day, or so, without seeing a single episode I had already seen.

What TNT does that’s brilliantly seductive yet trecherous is how they end an episode and immediately go into the next one. As soon as an episode ends, it shows the credits for about two seconds before shrinking them to the bottom of the screen and starting the next episode. Before you’ve had time to stretch and go to the restroom, they’ve already found the body and rolled the intro credits. Then a commercial. No, wait, that’d be humane — after the intro credits, they STILL don’t give you a break, and bring Briscoe and his partner onto the scene. You’re roped in before the first commercial. By the time that first commercial finally does hit, it’s too late. You’re stuck.

I do wish they went in order a bit better — I’d like a little storyline of why characters come and go from the show. I just caught Angie Harmon’s final episode; it was fairly unceremonious. You would think that when an esteemed Highland Park High School alum leaves the show (not that I’m also an alum and thus impartial), they would get more fanfare. A parade, perhaps?

I’m also hooked on all the spinoffs — Special Victims Unit, Trial by Jury, Criminal Intent. SVU is my fav of the bunch. Trial by Jury wears on me a little. I got pissed off during the last episode because I didn’t think the lawyers did that good job. But apparently the actors did, since I got pissed off at them.

I’ve heard the competing CSI is also good. I refuse to watch it — if for no other reason than I don’t really have the time to support another television addiction.

The only episode of CSI I watched was the one with furries.

It featured this scene at the beginning (provided that I can link images in the comment form):

    Yeah.

My mom loves L&O; I watched it with her here and there. Of all the female ADAs they’ve had, I think Claire was my favorite. And Sam Waterston is awesome. I’ve never watched any of the spinoffs (except one episode of SVU with my dad when it first started, it involved child molestation or something.)

    That’s all.

Yeah mine too. The one male ADA they had sucked, he was robotic. But Sam Waterston is amazing, agreed. SVU is intense. It’s like, super intense. But it’s so good. Chris Meloni is awesome. But all the plots involve rape / child molestation / etc. So you have to be kind of ready for that. But it’s good.

Jesse L. Martin is so cute.

Heh, I guess so… especially now that I look and see that IMDB lists SVU’s “working title” as “Law and Order’s Sex Crimes.” A title like that makes it sound like the cast was involved.

Kait, did you see the season finale? Something happens to him… SPOILER: he gets shot. he’s alive but in critical condition

Pat, SVU is great, I recommend it — but be ready for some crazy stuff

CSI is AMAZING. I’m telling you, quit Law and Order while you can ( I used to be a junkie), and switch over to Spike TV and watch CSI as soon as possible. You will be so glad you made the transition, because trust me, Law and Order seems sooooo lame. L

Gawd Newman, don’t tell me that… the last thing I need is to spend more time in front of the TV… argh. I long for simpler times when my favorite shows were just one once a week, as opposed to 19 times a day, so that I don’t have to worry about losing hundreds of hours wasting away in front of the tube…

No way! CSI is so not better. (Especially not the shitty spinoffs, but not even the original.) Besides that, L&O has a decade of clout behind it. It was the first and the best.

But don’t get me started on NYPD Blue, baby.

Ooh, you and Lauren are going to have to duke it out with a dance-off. See previous Dance Off: http://www.flickr.com/photos/akaufmann/15726596/in/set-378513/

Why is NYPD Blue good? Man, I love Law and Order. More good episodes were on last night. But I do prefer Jerry Orbach to Dennis Farina.

Huh. I appear to have comments set to be justified. Learn something new every day… don’t you love wonky forced spacing for justification?

Yes, forced spacing is so hot.

NYPD Blue is awesome because it’s all the cop work that you like so much. And Dennis Franz is so wonderful (in my opinion, better than Orbach). He carries the show.

I am a huge Law & Order fan… TNT got me hooked. CSI is the same thing over and over again, it’s nowhere near what Law & Order offers.

Stephan — thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! I’m the same way, TNT got me hooked. And they keep feeding my addiction. Gah.

Two votes against CSI, one vote for. Looks like you lose, Lauren! :)

Mallory — Mm.. I do like the cop work. But the law part is interesting too… I would just do Order 60%, law %40, as opposed to 50%/50%. A slight adjustment. I love Sam Waterston. He’s awesome. Dennis Franz better than Jerry Orbach? I’m skeptical, but I’ll give it a shot…

Andy, no problem! I enjoy checking out new blogs and you’ve definitely caught my attention with your design and content. Bookmarked

I really enjoy Sam Waterston and Jerry Orbach, you can’t beat them. I really liked Angie Harmon (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004990/) as the assistant DA, a Texas woman kicking butt in NY. But all of the assistant DAs have been great.

Aww shucks. Thanks Stephan! You’re the best.

Yup, Angie Harmon is definitely my favorite too — she kicked ass and meant business. Love it. Alum from my Dallas high school, too — but she was there about 3 years before I was a frehsman. I think she still lives in the area though…
