Review: Google Talk

This review is going to be short, since I use a Mac. Google Talk software doesn’t work on Macs. Surprise.

If you use a Mac chat client with Jabber support(such as Adium or iChat), you can connect to Google Talk servers using the Jabber protocol. (here’s how.) I’m doing that, so, to me, Google Talk looks just like Adium.

C- for Google Talk. Props for making a nice, clean interface (or so I think, based on screen shots). Props for making it Jabber. Big minus props for not making us a pretty Mac version. Also, continued big minus props for continuing to use Arial font EVERYWHERE in Google-land, which drives me nuts. I hate that font.

If you want to give Google Talk a shot, try me at akaufmann@gmail.com (but don’t email me there — I rarely check that email address). Or, you can just IM me at my usual AIM screen name of MikieMills.

Although I don’t much see the point of yet another IM service, I am definitely intrigued by the audio messaging (although I am unclear if it is real-time or what). Which is funny because you know how anxiety-prone I am about telephones.

However, Google also doesn’t usually support Win 98 (why should it?) which is what I have at home, so I probably won’t have much opportunity to use any of the new features.

I did get a chance to use Google Talk at work — what’s nice about it is that it really is bloat-free. It’s slim, clean, and not loaded with crap.

So YOU’RE the Windows 98 user I keep seeing in my logs! ;)

Alas, yes. My ghetto Toshiba laptop shows no signs of dying, so I’m loathe to spend money on a new computer until it’s absolutely necessary. I’ve heard others have had similar experiences with their old Toshibas.

Well, props to Toshiba for making a durable beast. Go Mac when you get a new computer! ;) Or don’t. I don’t want to be That Annoying Mac Guy that everyone knows. I just happen to like them — but I fully realize they’re not for everyone. Wow, my guilt reflex really kicked in quickly on that one.
