Rain, rain, go away
As I’m sure most everyone has heard, Hurricane Rita is bearing down on Texas. Up here in Dallas, I’m not overly concerned about our weather — early projections had the storm going over us with possible category 1 winds, current projections have the storm going east of us and us seeing an inch or so of rain.
But man, there are a lot of people in some pretty tough spots.
My girlfriend Mallory’s mom and brother are in Madisonville, TX, and out of gas and cell phone battery, along with the rest of Houston. [UPDATE (9-23): They arrived in Dallas safely early this morning -- hooray!]
New Orleans is starting to see rain already — the last thing they need right now.
Beaumont / Port Arthur area, with tons of oil refineries, is in danger.
Houston and its giant population is trying to get to Dallas or Austin or San Antonio, and being stuck in probably the biggest traffic jam in history.
And even up here in Dallas, the city is scrambling to find room for not just Katrina victims but now also Houston residents.
I really hope the hurricane weakens quickly and peters out without causing too much damage. In fact, I reckon I’ll be praying for it. If you’re the praying type, I know a lot of people would appreciate you chipping in your prayers.

Don’t forget that house of mine…in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area.
Thank you for all the help you’ve given. You’ve been amazing. <3
This may be the longest traffic jam in history, but it isn’t the biggest. The previous record for length (according to Guinness)was 109 miles from Lyon to Paris on 2/16/80. I heard 100 miles for Dallas-Houston bumper to bumper, but I don’t know of that was rounding down or up.
Now for the biggest jam, meaning the most vehicles, in history. Any guesses? It was on April 12, 1990, and it consisted of 18 MILLION cars. It was the mass exodus from East Germany to West Germany. I read this when I was taking defensive driving, and I thought it said 1.8 million cars, but Guinness says 18 million. That’s a lot of cars.
You Texans are a trip. Turns out I’m moving to San Antonio in January, so I’ll be a trip soon too.
Seems the hurricane did us all a favor. I certainly did pray for that, along with a little aside to the almighty about a pantry stocked with beef jerky for the rest of my life.
One for two ain’t bad.
Did us all a favor? Oh, do you mean by weakening? Yeah, that was rather nice of it, wasn’t it? I still have my house…but my grandparents might be moving in with my family.
Speaking of one out of two…
Yeah, I was trying to personify the hurricane, a common device used to bring a bit levity to a bad situation. I’m sorry to hear about your kin; as someone who grew up very close to the Atlantic ocean, I know what its like to lose a house (or three) to hurricanes.
I’m really glad the hurricane did weaken and wasn’t a cat 5 when it hit land. Still not good times, but could definitely have been worse.
And welcome to Texas, Josh! new job?
Yep Yep. Chuckin’ the east coast for a little western lurve — couldn’t be more exicted, to be honest. All the Shiner I can drink.
And you’re going to get the best Mexican and Tex-Mex food on the planet. It’ll change your diet forever. Enjoy becoming fat!
(I weigh 55 lbs more than I did in high school — Mexican food + a slower metabolism as I get older = larger tummy)
