My brief hiatus and the Dallas Mavericks Hoop Troop

I took a bit of an unannounced hiatus from the blog as I got used to life getting a bit busier. My usual balancing act between work life, freelance work, social life, and Peronsal Andy Time(tm) faced a bit of an upheaval when I added game night entertainment at Dallas Mavericks home games to my schedule.

I’ve joined the Mavericks Dr Pepper Hoop Troop — the group of guys at Mavericks home games that sling t-shirts into the crowd, help with planned in-game timeout activities, and just generally try to keep the crowd on its toes. Essentially, a male cheerleader of sorts, just without all that scary backflips and stuff.

So far it’s been an amazing experience — getting to see and be a part of the behind-the-scenes workings of an NBA game production. I’ve got a few stories to tell from the experience so far (4 pre-season games and the Fan Jam — an intra-team scrimmage), and I’m sure I’ll have plenty more as the season progresses (home opener is Saturday night, against San Antonio). I talked to the Mavericks and made sure that it’s kosher within my contract to talk about the experience, and all lights are green (with the exception of a few topics I’m discouraged to discuss). So I look forward to sharing some of those stories.
