At a sporting event? Let the kid next to you have the free tshirt if you catch one

In my new role as a member of the Dallas Mavericks Hoop Troop, I find myself throwing tshirts into the crowd quite often. For instance, when running “Go Mavs” cheers in the upper deck, we use freebie tshirts as an incentive to make some serious noise. We generally go into a section with one t-shirt, and toss it to someone who is making a lot of noise and is really into the game.

Personally, I usually try to throw the tshirts to kids (not always, but usually). The problem is that it’s hard to get the shirt to kids because of their shorter stature and shorter arms and, in general, being less aggressive in going after it. When a kid has been particularly loud, I point at them before I throw the shirt — it’s my way of saying to the people around the kid “hey, let the kid catch it, OK?”

Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t. Today, there were three or four times that I can recall someone grabbing the shirt right before it got to the kid. One person saw me go “aww!” and handed the shirt to the kid. I appreciated that. And that person probably felt good about themselves — which is more valuable than a freebie tshirt, anyway.

I’m going to have to work on my accuracy as a tshirt quarterback — maybe even work in some play action and routes. The problem is that accuracy varies greatly depending on how tightly the shirt is packed — so shirts I am in at one person often end up 4 or 5 people away.

At any rate, next time you’re at a sporting event and catch a freebie tshirt, give it to the kid behind you. They’ll appreciate it and you won’t really miss the shirt in the end, anyway.

The question is, how many of these free shirts do you get your hands on and don’t you think Mark Cuban would appreciate a good Mavs fan sporting Mavs gear in Los Angeles????

I think he’d prefer you went to http://www.mavsgear.com and dropped a pretty penny on the good stuff — the freebie tshirts are more Dr Pepper tshirts (the Hoop Troop sponsor) than Mavs shirts. The front is blank (completely blank) and the back is Dr Pepper bottles, with a Mavs logo in the corner. I can take a picture if you want. And if you really do want one, Eric, as a longtime bud and faithful reader, that can probably be arranged.

I recently realized that the Mavs are the only team of the 4 major dallas sports teams that I have no apparel of.

    I need to change this…perhaps I’ll check out mavsgear.com.

Can I get a blue blazer there?

I wish! That blue blazer from Cuban was stellar. I’d wear that. You should get one of those pink Dirk jerseys — they’re so you.

The shirt I caught was a large which would be way too big for a kid, do you throw other sizes too?

We throw large and XL. Pot luck which one you get. A girl once came up to me and was like, “Are those shirts, like, cute?” and I said “Eh. Not really. And they’re large and XL.” “Oh well I don’t want one then.”
