The oatmeal cookie debate

I’ve had a LiveJournal for quite a while, and while most of my thoughts get put down in this blog, I do still use my LiveJournal on occasion for goofy posts and memes. I recently posted a list of about 20 or so random thoughts, and I hit a bit of a nerve with the following items:

  • Oatmeal cookies are totally underrated
  • Raisins in cookies are totally overrated, though

Turns out several people agree with me. Why is it so dang hard to get an oatmeal cookie that isn’t loaded up with raisins? I don’t like the raisin taste and I don’t like the raisin texture. But I love the oatmeal cookie. And the oatmeal chocolate chip combo is a true taste explosion.

At what point did the raisin become inexorably intertwined with oatmeal, and vice-versa? Can we begin taking steps to break this bond? Society will be the better for it.

Try the slice & bake oatmeal cookies @ Whole Foods, there are few raisins [you could pull before baking] -its a delicious batter filled with rich butter & great oatmeal - so convenient I can get my fix almost daily.

Slice and bake? AND pull raisins? That’s 3 steps. My cooking abillity and attention span tends to falter right around 2 steps. It’s why I’m such an excellent cereal maker. Pour milk, pour cereal. Eat. If there were a third step, such as sprinkle marshmellows, I’d get confused and try to poke my eyeballs with a spoon.

Dude, you pour the milk first? That’s weird.

And oatmeal and raisins are perfect together! Suck it up! (Not like all those stupid nuts that people keep trying to sneak into cookies. Grrrr!)

Rob: See, I can’t even get my instructions right. My mom pours the milk first, which is weird. I, however, am more traditional and do pour the cereal first. I just messed up in the description.

Oatmeal and raisins are NOT perfect together! But I agree on nuts in cookies. Sometimes, nuts in cookies are perfect. But usually not. Now, nuts in brownies? That’s a-ok. But cookies are not meant to have nuts. I agree with you whole-heartedly there.

Oh, brownies were never meant to have nuts. The first occasion started as an industrial accident involving an elephant, a chimpanzee, and Betty Crocker. Somehow, mass insanity has made the nut continue to contaminate brownies to this day.

    Dude, that’s harsh.

Okay, I’ve just gotta be the lone voice of sanity to weigh in on this lofty matter. Oatmeal cookies do indeed require raisins. But even moreso, they also should have nuts. An oatmeal cookie’s gotta be substantial - it should be a whole “Back to Nature” experience the likes of which would make even Euell Gibbons proud.
