Lunar Adventures: exploring a little bit of everything

Quick hits for 06/22/2006
- I really need a better title for these “miscellaneous thoughts” postings. Something that is more intriguing and riveting than “Quick hits for [date].” Any suggestions out there?
- I still have a lot of NBA and NBA Finals thoughts to get out, but I’m still in mourning / recovery. Right now, I’m trying to be positive and focus on what a great year the Mavericks had.
- I’m “watching” the Texas Rangers game on ESPN Gamecast, which is more or less a minimalistic play by play. It can be frustrating, though — for instance, it just reported the following: “San Diego’s manager B Bochy ejected by T Mcclelland in the 5th.” I wish it said why. What happened? Did he charge onto the field after Mcclelland and start beating him across the face with a hot dog he took from a fan in the front row? Did he do a striptease on top of the dugout roof, revealing a tattoo that says “I [heart] Vinny”? I wish the Gamecast would give just a LITTLE more detail.
- No, my hand bruises obtained while punching a garage door-thing inside the American Airlines Center have not fully healed.
- Yes, I am excited about the upcoming Lemony Snicket book, the final one in the series. Sue me.
- I am lusting awfully heavily for a MacBook. I see them selling like hotcakes — I was at a couple of Apple Stores yesterday, and over the course of about an hour I saw them ring up 3 Macbooks. That’s a lot of laptop selling for one hour. If any of you peeps out there have one, how is it treating you? Any issues?
- The NBA playoffs, despite being a ton of fun, were definitely a stressful time for me — a lot of stressful evenings and some hard work. I was able to quantify it yesterday, when I got back to the gym for the first time in a couple of weeks — I lost 12 pounds during the Western Conference and NBA Finals. And some of that weight was probably from hair loss (I have thick, heavy, hair.)
- Snow cones sure do taste good. I could go for one right now. Instead, I’ll settle for some cake.

I still love my MB, the Office 2004/Rosetta thing I just complained to you about aside (and that’s not really the MB’s fault anyway.) Seeing mine has convinced my sister to get one too.
I wonder how often you’ll get to use the tasty frozen treats tag.
I’d like to amend my comment–there is one thing that’s been bothering me about the MB. Sometimes it gets all weird and crashes when I wake it from sleep. It’s strange, I’m going to have to look into it… I don’t know if it’s just a consequence of being Rev. A hardware or what. Just today when I booted it up after the crash it loaded the desktop but something in the startup sequence got fubared; Spotlight kept crashing and trying to reload itself (hence the “ahh my finder is going crazy”).
Another reboot fixed it, thankfully.
I’d say either use “Tasty Frozen Treats” or “Mind Dump” … I’m leaning towards TFT.
The MacBook Pro is nice, but I’m avoiding them because of all the problems I keep reading about (mostly at TUAW). The one thing I remember from this Mac guy I used to know, was that you always avoid first gen Apple hardware. I’d say take a chance if it’s really bothering you, because you can always get it repaired or yell at AppleCare and exchange it for a new one.
Blueberry snow cones are crack.
“Andy McNuggets” ?
I don’t think McDonald’s would sue you…
Since you worked so hard to get that 12 lbs off, make sure you don’t throw it all away on an ice cream/Mavs lost binge.
I just bought a MacBook Pro less than a week ago and since it’s my first Mac I am learning a lot. I’ve used a Mac before but never owned one, so I’m figuring out what software to use for what functions, etc.
I have not had any of the mentioned problems. Heat is only an issue (to me at least) when it is plugged in, but isn’t that all laptops?
I went into the Apple store and played with the MacBook to make sure it wasn’t what I wanted, and I was right. Most people think the glossy screen is alright, I hated it. Too much glare, way too much glare. I can’t imagine working with it outside, which is where I code most of the time.
The keyboard was neat and wasn’t hard to type on and the magnetic latch for the screen was pretty sweet. I like the MacBook but didn’t want the screen or the integrated video card. Plus, by the time you upgrade the RAM (you have to buy two 512 sticks), and get a bigger harddrive you are looking at a price comparable to the MBP (if you are going for the black MB). Instead, I paid a little extra and got a bigger screen and a faster processor.
