On measuring success

One the topics floating around here in Meadows administration is the topic of measuring success — specifically, how students define success and whether or not that changes throughout the course of their college career.

That got me to thinking, how do I define success?

Life-wise, that’s a tricky question.  But career-wise?  Easy.

Flexible hours, an office with a door AND a window, and the ability to afford furniture made out of real wood instead of particleboard.

I have an office with a door and a window and a boss who is all right with occasional hours flexibility. My furniture is still crippling me. But even if it wasn’t, I don’t think I’d feel successful. I think I’d need to feel like whatever I was doing mattered to some greater purpose.

Making a difference… yeah, that’s important. And I’d love to make a difference on the road to owning real wooden furniture. But it’s hard to make big impacts. I’m OK with small impacts. And I think everyone that tries makes a small impact. I’m certain you are, whether or not you think you are.
